a Maryland gun shop owner has decided against selling the nation’s first smart gun in his shop after gun rights advocates slammed his plan.

Andy Raymond, owner of Engage Armament, dropped his plan Thursday after receiving death threats and dealing with protests.

A similar backlash was experienced by a California gun store that put the nation’s first smart gun on sale. According to a Post report on the Oak Tree Gun Club, the sale of the Armatix iP1 smart gun led to attacks against the store in online forums and social networks.


“If the same reaction happens here, we’ll be out of business,” Raymond told the Post, noting that Maryland’s gun laws have “already essentially put us out of business.”

According to Armatix, the Armatix Smart System “consists of a radio-controlled watch that is responsible for gun access and use.” The Armatix iP1 smart gun will only shoot if it is within range of this watch. Therefore, the gun cannot be used by someone who steals the weapon, but does not have access to the watch.Gun rights activists worry that the new technology will be mandated and will infringe on Second Amendment rights.
