5 things to know about Tea Party fave Ben Sasse (Usatoday)

Meet Ben Sasse, a heavy favorite to become the next U.S. senator from Nebraska.

Sasse defeated four other candidates to win the Republican nomination in the Cornhusker state, in a victory for Tea Party conservatives. Sasse will go on to meet Democrat Dave Domina in the general election, in a state Mitt Romney easily won with 60% of the vote in 2012. GOP Sen. Mike Johanns is retiring.

Five things to know about Sasse:

He is president of Midland University in Fremont, Neb., a private liberal arts college with 1,200 students located about 20 minutes from Omaha.

The GOP nominee is 42 years old and  no stranger to Washington: He served in President George W. Bush’s administration, most recently as an assistant secretary at the Health and Human Services Department. 

He graduated from Harvard (bachelor’s degree), spent his junior year at Oxford and earned advanced degrees from Yale.

Sasse’s backers include a who’s who of the Tea Party, including Sarah Palin and Sens. Ted Cruz and Mike Lee. Groups such as the Senate Conservatives Fund, Freedomworks, and Tea Party Patriots were behind Sasse.

He wrestled for two years at Harvard, specializing in head-butting his opponents, according toNational Review Online. There’s a scar on his forehead, along his hairline, caused by falling off a hayloft as a boy. Since Sasse has no feeling there, it helped him with his wrestling specialty. “It gave me a small advantage,” he’s quoted as saying.
