Thousands of Ford Mustangs converge on Cabarrus (Independenttribune)

CONCORD, N.C. — Jack Roush and Mustangs have enjoyed a long and legendary partnership, both on the road with Mustang sports cars and in the air with P-51 Mustang fighters.
On Thursday, the NASCAR team owner helped welcome some of the thousands of Mustang enthusiasts from across the country who have come to Cabarrus County to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic car’s introduction in 1964.
The 50th anniversary of the Mustang is really a milestone that I want to celebrate along with all the other Mustang enthusiasts around the world,” Roush said.
Roush talked about his love of the Ford Mustang during an event Thursday at Roush Fenway Racing’s hangar at Concord Regional Airport with fellow Mustang enthusiasts gathered around the famed racer and former Ford engineer.

“I went to work for Ford Motor Company in ’64, within 30 days of the time the Mustang was introduced to the public I was working in the Dearborn assembly plant on quality problems,” Roush said. “And I’m amazed that I made it 50 years to be able to celebrate this day.”
Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord is the hub of the four-day East Coast Mustang celebration. The other event this week is in Las Vegas.
“We’ve done Las Vegas! Never been to Charlotte!” said Anita Bell-Karno with the Diablo Valley Mustang Association and Mustangs Across America. She had just driven her 2005 Legend Lime green Mustang GT across the country to join the party.
“It was an amazing experience,” Bell-Karno said. “And of course we were thrilled to get here. I can actually unpack for four days!”
Roush talked during a gathering included Concord Mayor Scott Padgett, who greeted visitors who drove their Mustangs more than 3,000 miles from Concord, Calif. to their sister city in North Carolina.
Padgett said that officials with the group Mustangs Across America contacted him about having the members of the two Concords meet.
But there is one thing that’s a bit different for the people in Concord, California. They pronounce there city, as in “conquered.” Padgett was quick to point out folks say things a bit different here.
“And I always say, we’ve never been conquered, we’re victorious,” Padgett said with a laugh.
About 500 Mustangs made their way from California to Concord for the celebrations here, with a few of the officials from Mustangs Across America meeting with Padgett and Roush.
“It’s great to be with them,” Roush said. “And it’s amazing that they made their decision to bring their cars. I guess they wanted some quality time with their cars or they wouldn’t have driven them all the way across the country.”
Padgett gave a gift basket that the group from Concord, Calif. will take back home to present their mayor, Tim Grayson. The gifts included the “Images of Concord” book by local historian and author Michael Eury; a bottle of Junior Johnson’s Midnight Moon moonshine and a City of Concord hat..
After receiving the gifts the crowd from Concord, Calif. made their way to Charlotte Motor Speedway to start participating in this week’s events.
The 50th Mustang Birthday celebration is expected to draw 20,000 fans of the iconic car from all over the world and pump $6 million into the local economy. The four-day event runs through Sunday with activities centered at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Events have also been organized at the Cabarrus Arena & Events Center and Friday night at 6 p.m. there will be a caravan of more than 850 Mustangs making their way from Charlotte Motor Speedway to downtown Kannapolis.
More than 4,000 Mustangs have been registered to participate at the events at Charlotte Motor Speedway, with cars from around the world. Padgett said he already saw cars from Italy and Hawaii.
Larry Booth, with Mustangs Across America, was just another one of the drivers who made his way from Concord, Calif. to Concord for the celebration, driving his 2007 Roush Stage 3 Roadster. Booth had met Roush in the past and had him sign the car in three different places, even before he met Roush again in Concord on Thursday.
“The destination is great, but it’s about the trip,” Booth said. “You get to meet all kinds of wonderful people who have the same common interest with the Mustang. And it’s neat because we’ve seen people from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, met people from New Zealand, Australia, Great Britain. It really is a wonderful trip to experience.”
